There are two main types of interpretation – consecutive and simultaneous. In consecutive interpretation, the speaker pauses once every few moments to allow the interpreter to translate. In simultaneous interpretation, both the speaker and interpreter speak simultaneously, and the audience listens through headsets.
Interpretation requires, among others, very good listening skills, an extensive vocabulary and terminologies of a particular industry or even across industries and a good cultural understanding. With good listening skills, the interpreter will be able to pick on the words and phrases uttered by the speaker, understand the message, remember the key points and articulate them in the target language. With extensive vocabulary, it will be relatively faster for the interpreter to find the right words and specialized terminologies to use. Lastly, a good understanding of cultural nuances that come with the language will enable the interpreter to better bridge the intent and message between parties.
Language competence is not the sole factor to consider in assigning the right interpreter. At Berlo Translations, we make it a point to at least get an overview of the context and format of the interpretation at the outset. Having an overview of the context and format – like the industry, the relevant specialization required, the setting, etc. – will allow us to assign the interpreter with the suitable educational and professional background for the task. In reality, no single interpreter can interpret for all types of contents and in all types of settings, and thus it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the coverage and format before any suitable assignment can be made.
If you are looking for an interpreter for a court hearing, conference, seminar, social event or any activity, we can provide on-site translator in Singapore and overseas who have the needed background and experience for the specific subject and setting.
